Starbucks customers who purchased scooped bulk coffee beans between 2007 and 2011 have until December 23 to file a claim to receive at least $5 from a class action settlement with the coffee giant.


The money is part of a class action settlement agreement between Starbucks Corp. and numerous consumers who claimed the company tacked on hidden fees to scooped coffee purchases of less than one pound. Plaintiffs alleged that Starbucks charged an undisclosed upcharge per pound for purchases of less than a pound of scooped coffee beans than it charged for a one-pound bag of the same type of coffee.


Starbucks denied any wrong doing but agreed to pay $1.7 million to resolve the consolidated litigation. A federal court approved the class action lawsuit settlement on May 24, 2013.


Class Members of the Starbucks scooped coffee settlement include all persons who made a purchase of less than one pound of scooped coffee beans at any time between December 9, 2007 and November 7, 2011 from any company-owned Starbucks store in the United States. It does not include half-pound purchases made from January to March 2008 of coffee that had half-pound prices posted on menu boards during that time.


Class Members that made these purchases using a registered My Starbucks Rewards card will receive at least $5 credited to their card. No Claim Form required. They will receive more money if the difference between what they would have paid without the alleged upcharge and what they actually paid is more than $5. This amount will be based on the number of eligible transactions made to the card.


Class Members who did not use a My Starbucks Rewards card will receive compensation only if they submit a valid Claim Form by December 23, 2013. Class Members who submit proof of purchase in the form of a receipt will receive the greater of $5 or the difference in what they paid with the alleged upcharge versus what they would have paid without the upcharge. A Class Member who submits a Claim Form without a receipt but with a sworn declaration will receive the lesser this difference or $10.
